Every single day throughout 1999, the last year of the last millennium, Frank Horvat photographed – working on this daily report of everyday life, his personal diary of the last year of the century. The challenge was to produce each day at least one image of substance. But beyond this, as a committed European, he also wished to include images from all fifteen countries of the European Union. Such a schedule would be punishing for anyone but that a man in his seventies – one of the established great photographers of the twentieth century – should still feel such an inner need, and have such determination, to record his world is simply extraordinary. The result is a fascinating and revealing panorama of one man’s vision – a self-portrait in a way – but also a sweeping vista of a continent nurtured by centuries of strong tradition, with a powerful sense of nationality and individuality as it faced the inevitable challenges and changes that the new millennium would bring.
