Photographing Okinawa for more than forty years, Kawaguchi Kazuyuki’s Okinawa Genshikou is a photographic memoir into the summer of 1976 which saw Kawaguchi travel for the first time to Okinawa and cementing what would be his lifelong relationship between the island, its people and himself. Bringing together the countless negatives from this period, Okinawa Genshikou captures the very essence of the community and individuals with whom Kawaguchi engaged with. Portraits of workers in a factory, children at play to photographs which capture generations within a family all present an opportunity to view Kawaguchi’s personal journey which explore and reflect on both the island’s past and its transforming situation within the present day.
