Following a violent car crash (the blue car on the central pages), Augusto Alves da Silva started an obsessive series related to accidents, and life on the road. A vibrant sequence of images that contrast speed with slowness, boredom and repetition with danger and surprise. It truly captures the crazy feeling of driving around, this is what being on the road really looks like today. Published on the occasion of the author´s exhibition “Dead End: an essay on optimism”, at Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Fundação de Serralves, Oporto in 2009 and sponsored by the Ministério da Cultura de Portugal, it is now for the first time available for distribution.
Augusto Alves da Silva (born in Lisbon, 1963) lives in Portugal. He studied at the London College of Printing, The Slade School of Fine Art, London, and Civil Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon. His work has been shown in several institutions such as the Serralves Museum, Oporto, MNCA Reina Sofia, Madrid, Chisenhale Gallery, London, Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Bozar, Brussels, the IX Biennale de Venezia di Architettura, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and The Photographers’ Gallery, London. He works with photography and video.
