Roger Ballen. Call of the Void is the eighth in a series of exhibitions at Museum Tinguely under the title Danse macabre with works responding to Jean Tinguely’s late work Mengele Totentanz (Kehrer 2017). In his often disturbing, unsettling photographs and installations, Ballen examines the human psyche and asks both himself and the viewer questions about being and becoming. Call of the Void consists of two parts: The walls are hung with photographs from Ballen’s last analogue series, Asylum of the Birds and Roger's Rats, while the centre of the space is dominated by a shack, a poor dwelling for people on the margins of society.

Born 1950 in New York and based in Johannesburg, South Africa, since 1982, Roger Ballen is one of the most important photographers of his generation. He has published over 25 books internationally and has collections in the most prominent museums in the world.
