“Como Agua para Ajolote” translates to “Like Water for Axolotl”. Axolotls are amphibians endemic to the Xochimilco canals in Mexico City. The canals have been mismanaged and polluted by the city so much that the axolotl is now an endangered species. Nowadays, most of axolotls live in captivity, including some that live in Paris, far from home, inside fishtanks filled with foreign waters.
Martha has been photographing her quotidian life since she moved to the States from México in 2014. Como Agua para Ajolote is a selection from this archive that features pictures from both her and her family both in the States and in Mexico.
